I thought the megapixel race was over! Guess not, what with Samsung showing off, for the very first time, the Samsung W880, the worlds first cellphone with a 12-megapixel camera. Because how many times have you said to yourself, Man, I want to take a photo of this unusual drink, but only have the iPhones rubbish camera? The odd thing is that the phone really does look like the typical digital camera on one side, and a standard issue touchscreen phone on the other side. Perhaps the word odd didnt quite capture what I meant to convey, but its far too late now to make any corrections. In a welcome reversal of trends, Samsung just stuffed a 3G cellphone into a 12 megapixel camera making this M8920 / Samsung W880
more of a camera than most 12 megapixel cameraphones can claim. While this presumed follow-up to Samsung’s Pixon 12 (M8910) isn’t official, the announcement looks imminent based on the leaked collateral above and the spyshots that emerged over the weekend.
What’s impressive here is that extending 3x optical zoom — something carried over from the Samsung W880 and Samsung S9110
– and dedicated camera controls like a mode dial, shutter and zoom, and big 3.3-inch WVGA AMOLED display. Rounding out the specs are HD (720p presumably) video, HSDPA data, WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth, microSD slot, and DMB mobile television; that latter spec making this Korea-only whenever it does launch. As for the specs: 3.3-inch AMOLED (!) display with an 800480 resolution; 4GB of built-in storage; T-DMB (in the Korean version, at leastexpect the international version to ship with Wi-Fi and GPS); and, of course, the built-in 12-megapixel camera, with 3x optical zoom and the ability to record 720p video. Thats a damn beefy phone.
