Today, MyRatePlan.com, one of the leading mobile phone information and comparison resource on the web, announced its predictions for the top five most popular smartphones of 2013. MyRatePlan based its rankings on a number of factors including historical manufacturer sales data, revisions to already popular handsets, consumer demand, anticipated features, and general buzz surrounding the phones to determine next years best-selling phones.

Here are the predicted top five best selling cell phones of 2013:

1. Apple iPhone 5S With new reports suggesting that Apple will be releasing an upgrade to its flagship iPhone device in June of 2013, there is little doubt that the iPhone 5S (or iPhone 6, depending on how they name it,) will be one of next years best selling mobile phones, if not the number one best selling device. All predictions point to the iPhone 5S/6 featuring an even higher-resolution HD Retina display, much improved battery life, NFC mobile payment technology, and increased storage space up to 120 GB. Some reports have also predicted that the next-generation iPhone will be available in more colors than just the traditional black and white. The iPhone 5S is also rumored to be available for the first time on T-Mobile.

2. Samsung Galaxy S4 With a rumored release date of February 2013, the Samsung Galaxy S4, also known as the Samsung Galaxy S IV, is sure to be one of next years most popular smartphones. The Samsung Galaxy S4 is predicted to feature a 5-inch HD AMOLED display, an Adonis Exynos 5400 microchip, a 2 GHz Cortex-A15 CPU, 2 GB of RAM, Android 4.2, and longer battery life. Some reports even speculate that the Samsung Galaxy S4 will feature a flexible screen, although these flexible screens are likely to come in later iterations of the Galaxy line.

3. BlackBerry 10 Research in Motion is looking to reverse their companys decline over the past couple of years by releasing the BlackBerry 10 in late January or early February 2013. Details are scarce on the exact features that BlackBerry 10 phones will have, but rumors point to an advanced camera that can take pictures even before the camera button is pressed, a new framework for app developers, touch-screen as well as physical keyboards, and a revolutionary new mobile web browser and OS navigation system. RIM desperately needs the BlackBerry 10 to be successful in order to catch up to Microsoft Windows Phone 8, Samsung/Google Android, and the Apple iPhone.

4. Facebook Phone from HTC The rumor that HTC has been working on a Facebook Phone has been around for years, but new reports predict that the mythical Facebook Phone might actually arrive in mid-2013. Reports suggest that the Facebook Phone will actually be an Android device forked in such a way to be highly customized and optimized for use with Facebook, which includes seamless integration with the social network.

5. Microsoft Surface Phone Recent reports have shown that Chinese manufacturer, Foxconn, is producing a Microsoft Surface cell phone. The rumored Microsoft Surface Phone would feature Windows Phone 8, but other details are still not known.

The big-hitters in the space made up of Apple, Samsung, HTC, Microsoft, and BlackBerry will be pulling out all the stops in order to ensure that their phone can gain as much market share as possible. It is still not yet known which carriers (AT&T, Verizon Wireless, Sprint, and T-Mobile) will carry each device, but decent guesses can be made based on the past devices they have carried from each manufacturer.
